Palm Z22 Leather Case

Palm Z22 Leather Case

The Z22. Palm’s final hurrah. A tiny rectangle of functionality, practically clinging to the edge of what we considered a “phone” at the time. Finding a decent case for one now feels like unearthing a lost artifact. I recently took on the unenviable task of evaluating one of these “universal” monstrosities—specifically, the DLveer case marketed for a slew of generic tablets, but theoretically compatible with the Z22.

The first clue that I was in trouble arrived in the form of the packaging: cheap, thin plastic that screamed, “I’m mostly air.” Inside, the case itself felt…flimsy. Constructed from PU leather, it attempts to mimic the premium feel of the real thing, but the illusion quickly fades. My initial impression? It’s far from perfect. However, let’s give credit where it’s due: the multi-angle stand actually works, albeit with a noticeable tendency to slip if you’re trying to use it on a slightly uneven surface. That’s a plus, considering the Z22’s tiny screen wasn’t ideal for extended viewing to begin with.

The case’s supposed “universal” nature, unfortunately, is its primary downfall. The elastic corner straps, designed to grip a range of devices, just don’t cinch down tight enough to secure the Z22. My ancient Palm kept sliding around, obscuring the screen and making the stylus a chore to access. Forget about one-handed operation. This is no match for the original Palm leather cases, with their form-fitting design and integrated belt clip.

I experimented. I folded small pieces of cardboard and wedged them in the corners to create a more snug fit. It’s a kludge, sure, but it mostly solves the problem. A bit of creative engineering can go a long way. But for the average user? It’s hardly ideal.

However, consider this. It offers a degree of protection, which the naked Z22 desperately needs. It prevents the screen from scratching. This is a crucial function in today’s world when the Palm still is a practical option for the few applications it can run.

So, here’s my takeaway. If you’re a purist, a collector looking for absolute historical authenticity, steer clear. The fit is imperfect, and the build quality leaves something to be desired. But, if you’re a die-hard Palm user who needs some degree of protection for your aging device, and you don’t mind a little fiddling, this DLveer case might just be workable. For now, try the cardboard trick, it could work wonders. And if the Palm Z22 is your main device, you have my deepest sympathies… and perhaps my respect.
